Del Sheriff photograph collection [graphic], ca. 1921-1928.

The collection contains approximately 350 small (13 x 34 cm.) panoramas. Scenics from Fairbanks to Petersburg during the 1920's make up the bulk of the collection. Other subjects include the Douglas fire, airplanes, including the Detroit Arctic Expedition (Fokker), Wiley Post, the Fairbanks fire, Hotel Nordale (Fairbanks), Alaska Agricultural College, Mt. Eckles. Many individuals from Juneau and other Alaska communities are identified. Locations include: Anchorage, Cordova, Douglas, Eklutna, Fairbanks, Haines, Ketchikan, LaTouche, Petersburg, Seward, Sitka, Skagway, Valdez, Wrangell.

Appr. 1,600 photographs : b&w ; 13 x 34 cm. (5 x 13 1/2") or smaller.

A piano tuner and wood re-finisher by profession, Del Sheriff's interest in photography is evident by the number of photographs he produced. Sheriff probably arrived in Alaska around 1921, traveling continually from Ketchikan to Nome for his work and photographing what he viewed. During a visit to the Hotel Nordale, in Fairbanks, President Harding personally complimented Mr. Sheriff on the bar's beautiful finish.
